Haiti - Insecurity : 96,000 Haitians displaced by urban guerrillas

The number of people displaced by gang and urban guerrilla violence in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area has tripled in the past five months, according to a report released last week by the International Organization for migration (IOM).

An early warning system on forced displacement set up by the DTM shows that almost a fifth of neighborhoods in Port-au-Prince were affected by widespread violence in July.

"Thousands of women, children and men have been forced from their homes to seek refuge from violence and destruction," said Ulrika Richardson, UN Resident Coordinator in Haiti. "The United Nations is working hard, hand in hand with humanitarian, government and local partners to help alleviate the hardships faced by many of the most vulnerable families."

The report was produced by IOM's Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), in coordination with the Haitian Directorate General of Civil Defence. DTM assessments provide accurate and regular data on internally displaced populations to inform evidence-based humanitarian action "This data collection represents a critical contribution to the humanitarian response in Haiti," said Michele Klein Solomon, Regional Director of IOM for Central and North America and the Caribbean, adding "This provides insight into the scale, scope and patterns of displacement, which is essential to inform the planning and implementation of evidence-based responses on evidence."
