Haiti - Montreal : The Haitian delegation continues to defend its interests on biodiversity at COP15

Tuesday, December 13, the delegation of the Ministry of the Environment which is taking part from December 7 to 18, 2022 in Montreal in the 15th meeting of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity (COP15), which brings together authorities, experts and representatives of organizations from around the world, met to discuss the progress of work and negotiations after several days of work.

Composed of representatives of the Ministry of the Environment and members of civil society organizations, the Haitian delegation participated in several working sessions and plenary meetings from December 7 to 12, with a view to advancing negotiations for the adoption of the global biodiversity framework.

Being part of the America and sharing many similarities with the Small Island Developing States (SIDS), Haiti aligns itself with the position of the countries of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Africa Group and many countries of the Latin America on resource mobilization; marine and coastal biodiversity, capacity building and others.

In the workshops, the members of the delegation highlighted Haiti's interests in relation to the themes, and shared after discussion the common position of the SIDS and the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (GRULAC) by to the text of the global framework.

Haiti supports the need for the creation of a global biodiversity fund that would enable SIDS to build their capacity for biodiversity conservation and the implementation of the global biodiversity framework. Haiti is also advocating for the establishment of mechanisms that will enable it to deal with invasive alien species.

As the high-level segment approaches, Haiti intends to intensify its efforts alongside SIDS and other developing countries to find a consensus leading to the adoption of the global framework for biodiversity.
