Haiti - FLASH : A barge loaded with containers sank at Port-Lafiteau

Wednesday, January 18, a barge (the Catalina Bluer) loaded with 73 containers, blocked at Port Lafiteau (Municipality of Cité Soleil) since November 22, 2022 due to insecurity on the roads, which was to go to the Port of Port-au-Prince, sank at the quay with its load for an undetermined reason.

No loss of human life was recorded

According to our information, the containers that went to sea belong to two Deka Group companies. "La Ménagère" (Everything for the house: fans, iron, blender, toaster, garbage cans, household items, etc.) and Cristo S.A (Dairy products (powdered milk, Baby food products, Pasta, Drinks , Flour, Sugar, Oil etc...)

Steps are underway to remove the containers from the water and refloat the barge. Until Thursday morning, no information was communicated to the press by the National Port Authority (APN) on the contents of the containers and the charges for this incident.

Note that this incident did not affect other Port operations. However, it is to be feared that the port will not be able to receive new barges until the containers have been taken out of the water and the barge refloated in order to make the quay accessible again...
