Haiti - Environment : First official assessment of forest fires (Video)

James Cadet, the Minister of the Environment, presented this week at a press conference a first official assessment of the fires that hit the National Natural Parks (Foret des Pins, La Visite and Macaya).

According to Cadet, technical and departmental bodies of the Ministry of Environment (MoE), volunteers from local populations and civil society organizations have jointly done an excellent job.

For the moment, the Minister has confirmed a control of the situation between 70% and 80% at the level of the National Parks affected, in particular at 80% at the level of Macaya, stressing that the environmental agents continue to fight tirelessly alongside the local populations, with a view to a total control of fires at the level of the National Natural Park of Forests of Pines and Lati-foliates of Macaya.

According to satellite data provided by the Canadian Space Agency and the Department of Natural Resources Canada, approximately 285 hectares have burned inside the park and nearly another 23 hectares have burned just outside the park boundaries.
