Haiti - FLASH : At least 15 dead, tens of thousands of victims and significant damage (Official provisional report) 05/06/2023 06:34:01
"On the morning of June 3rd, torrential rains fell on the country, causing several rivers to flood. The recorded amounts of rain caused flooding and landslides in some areas. Many infrastructures were damaged. Local authorities had to put in place emergency measures to ensure the safety of the affected populations. The updated provisional assessment reports 15 deaths, 8 missing and 7,475 families affected (i.e. 37,375 people) 1,219 flooded houses and about 13,390 people displaced in the departments of West, Nippes, South-East, North-West and of the Center. In the West department alone, 5,510 households are affected and more than 2,539 households are displaced. In the Center department, the agricultural sector is very impacted. The department of the West is the most affected department, the impact was more violent than elsewhere in the regions and municipalities and localities of Merger, Gressier, Léogâne, Fonds-Verrettes, Cité-Soleil, Tabarre etc... but the impact was just as violent in the South-East department, or the North-West department particularly in the city of Port-de-Paix which has been in the rain since Tuesday, May 30... [...]" Sunday, June 4th, the Ministry of Public Works carried out interventions to unblock national road #3, in Joumou, Péligre area (Route Boudon) as well as other sections which were obstructed by tons of rubble (crumbling, landslides, alluvium, etc...) Other similar interventions are recorded in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince and in other regions of the country to allow the unblocking of roads to facilitate the movement of vehicles. For the time being, the Meteorological Unit of Haiti is closely monitoring the evolution of weather conditions and is making arrangements to regularly inform the population. It also encourages citizens of the safety instructions issued by the competent authorities. Emergency response teams remain mobilized to provide support to affected communities and to continue assessing the damage caused by these torrential rains. Under the General Directorate of Civil Protection, the various partners of the National Risk and Disaster Management System are mobilizing at the National Emergency Operation Center (COUN) to coordinate urgent responses in terms of shelter, food and hygiene products and drinking water for the benefit of those affected. The DGPC would like to remind the population of the importance of remaining vigilant in the face of hydro-meteorological hazards that could occur at any time. It is essential to follow the recommendations of the local authorities in terms of flood risk prevention and evacuation. It also takes the opportunity to remind those exposed to not cross flooded waterways and wild waters under any circumstances.
