Haiti - Environment : Sampling of soil samples in several communes of the Great Nord

As part of the Initiative for Sustainable Land Management (PISLM) Project, the Ministry of the Environment, in synergy with the Ministry of Agriculture and the National Center for Geospatial Information, conducted a joint soil sampling mission in the North, Nord-East and Center departments. This joint mission had the technical support of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the University of King Henri of Limonade.

This mission enabled technicians to take soil samples from the Samana River and Marion River watersheds, with a view to updating and strengthening national and regional soil data. This information will also contribute to technical capacity building, as a means to improve the decision-making process on sustainable soil and land management. More than 18 soil samples were taken to be studied at the soil laboratory of the University Roi Henri Christophe de Limonade and will then be shipped to Trinidad and Tobago for further analysis.

The results of these analyzes will be used to build resilience to land degradation, major natural hazards, climate change through the implementation of climate-smart agriculture and the strengthening of risk management related to drought, indicated Eder Audate Director of Forests of the Ministry of the Environment.

On the other hand, the agronomist Donald Joseph of the MARNDR, recalls that despite poor agricultural practices in the sampling sites, the soil contains structures that can guarantee profitability. Together with laboratory studies, the results will establish the types of intervention to better protect the soil, through better agricultural practices.
