Haiti - Environment : Haiti welcomes the decision to make the fund for losses and damages operational
At the 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) in Dubai United Arab Emirates (from November 30 to December 12), Haiti alongside the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) and Small Island Developing States (SIDS) welcomed the adoption of the decision to operationalize the fund for losses and damages due to climate change. This is a major victory for LDCs and SIDS which are the most vulnerable to harmful effects of climate change.

The text implementing the loss and damage fund was adopted on Thursday, to the applause of the representatives of this 28th Conference. The principle of this fund, which will help vulnerable countries hit hard by extreme weather events, was announced during COP 27 in Egypt. It will be temporarily hosted for four years by the World Bank, but will be managed by an independent secretariat.

Haiti takes note of the announcements made by the first contributors, starting with the United Arab Emirates and Germany, who each announced 100 million dollars, Japan 10 million, the United States 17.5 million and the United Kingdom 60 million pounds sterling while recognizing alongside SIDS and LDCs that these funds will be useful to launch the first activities of the fund…

Climate change constitutes one of the major challenges for the socio-economic development of Haiti. The country is present at COP28 through an intersectoral delegation to defend its priorities. These include the Global Stocktake, the Global Adaptation Goal, the Mitigation Work Program, the Loss and Damage Fund and Financial Mechanisms and the Just Transition Work Program.
