Haiti - Torrential rain : The Haitian canal overflows, flooded infrastructure
Following heavy rains in the province of Dajabón, the Maribaroux Plain Irrigation Canal built in Haiti with a water intake on the Massacre River overflowed and flooded the infrastructure and part of the area.

"The site that is being built is incorrect. It goes against all the rules for constructing hydraulic structures, you cannot build such a structure in a meander (a zone of curvature) because when the water flow increases it erodes the side of the curvature," said Juan Carlos Nova, operations director of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources, explaining that with further floods, it will start to erode behind the gabion, which will affect the canal infrastructure.

He recalled that during meetings with Haitian officials, the Dominican authorities had warned of the danger represented by this structure, emphasizing "When the river reaches high flow rates and meets this structure in this curve, it will cause flooding at the both on the Dominican side and on the Haitian side. »
