Haiti - FLASH : Hurricane BERLY Category 5, Haiti on Yellow Alert 02/07/2024 05:07:10 Hurricane BERYL continues its path towards the southeastern Caribbean islands. According to the latest forecasts, BERYL can bring many dangers such as rain, strong winds and swell to the South, South-East and Grand'Anse departments from this Tuesday to Wednesday July 3rd. The Hydrometeorological Unit has therefore declared the yellow level of vigilance in the country face the threat of flooding, heavy rains and strong winds that may cause. The National Risk and Disaster Management System asks the population to continue to monitor weather reports and follow the advice of the authorities. Due to turbulent sea conditions, the Hydrometeorological Unit in collaboration with Semanah and Civil Protection announced the ban on all cabotage activity on the south coast of the country. This is why all boat operators are asked to avoid going to sea from Tuesday evening until Wednesday July 3rd. Hurricane Beryl this Tuesday at 5am : As of 5 a.m. Tuesday morning, the eye of Hurricane Beryl was located near latitude 14.6 north and longitude 66.9 west. Or 645km southeast of Haiti. Beryl is moving west-northwest at nearly 22 mph (35 km/h) and is expected to continue moving rapidly west-northwest over the next few days and turn west from here Thursday. On the forecast track, Beryl's center will move rapidly today across the southeast and central Caribbean Sea and is expected to pass near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Thursday. Maximum sustained winds remain near 165 mph (270 km/h) with higher gusts. Beryl is a Category 5 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Weakening is expected to begin later today, but Beryl is still expected to be near major hurricane intensity as it moves toward the central Caribbean and passes near Jamaica on Wednesday and the Cayman Islands on Thursday. Further weakening is expected afterward, although Beryl is expected to remain a hurricane in the northwest Caribbean. Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 40 miles (65 km) from the center and tropical storm-force winds extend outward up to 125 miles (205 km). - Tropical storm conditions are expected in the warning area along the southern coast of Hispaniola later today. - Storm surge could raise water levels as much as 1 to 3 feet above ground level in onshore wind areas along the southern coast of Hispaniola. - Precipitation from Beryl's outer bands could impact parts of Hispaniola today through Wednesday, with 100 to 150 millimeters of rain possible. - Swells are also expected to reach the southern coasts of Puerto Rico and Hispaniola later today.
