Haiti - FLASH : The Bar calls for the shelving of the draft Constitution

As part of the constitutional reform process and in keeping with his commitment to conducting the transition in accordance with the principles of dialogue and inclusion, Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé received, at his official residence, the members of the Commission established by the Port-au-Prince Bar Association, as well as the President of the Bar, Me Patrick Pierre-Louis.

This high-level meeting was devoted to the presentation of the analysis report on the Preliminary Draft Constitution by the members of the Commission, Josué Pierre-Louis and Bernard Gousse.

The Head of Government welcomed the Bar Association's contribution to this debate of national interest and reaffirmed the Executive's determination to involve the Nation's vital forces in any consideration of the country's institutional future.

The Port-au-Prince Bar Commission has been highly critical of the "legal irregularity and illegitimacy" of the process and has requested that the document be shelved, said Me Bernard Gousse, President of the commission. The commission denounces constitutional fraud and warns against authoritarianism.

Despite the numerous criticisms and denunciations from various figures and organized groups in society, the Government remains resolutely committed to making the constitutional issue a major priority of the Transition.
