Haiti - Politic : The Minister for the Status of Women speaks at the United Nations (video)

On Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, as part of her participation in the seventieth session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70), the highest intergovernmental body worldwide and the largest annual United Nations gathering dedicated to promoting equality between women and men and the rights of women and girls, Pedrica Saint Jean, Minister of the Status of Women and Women's Rights, addressed the Ministerial Roundtable on the theme "Ensuring and Strengthening Access to Justice for All Women and Girls."

Minister Pedrica Saint Jean presented the concrete initiatives implemented by the Haitian government to improve the status of women and guarantee gender equality in all areas. As an example, she highlighted the implementation of the quota of at least 30% women in the new government team and the adoption of the 2014-2034 Gender Equality Policy, demonstrating that the promotion of women's rights is a core priority for the Haitian government.

She also emphasized several key actions undertaken by the Haitian state through its Ministry, such as legislative reforms aimed at eliminating discrimination against women and girls, particularly through the implementation of more inclusive and protective laws and practices, and the creation of specialized judicial units and units to address cases of sexual violence.

In a speech (read aloud) imbued with commitment and a sense of duty, she presented a stark assessment of the state of justice in Haiti regarding gender equality. According to her, access to justice in Haiti is one of the essential pillars of gender equality :"Without accessible, inclusive, and equitable justice, the rights recognized for women and girls remain fragile, and inequalities continue to be reproduced."

Aware that a more just and peaceful society cannot be built without the full participation of women and the effective guarantee of their rights, Minister Pedrica Saint Jean concluded her speech by reiterating Haiti’s commitment to continue its efforts to build a truly equitable, inclusive, and accessible justice system, where every woman and girl can assert her rights, live free from violence, and fully participate in the development of society.
