The House of Representatives Votes to Extend TPS

The U.S. House of Representatives voted to extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 350,000 Haitians for three years (224 votes to 204), despite opposition from the Trump administration. This bill, supported by 10 Republicans and one independent, will now go to the Senate, where its passage in the same form is uncertain. If it passes this stage, President Trump's signature will be required to enact the bill, but he can also veto it. Republicans who voted against the bill argued that extending TPS for Haitians was dangerous and would lead to increased crime (racist propaganda). This move comes as the Supreme Court is set to rule on the validity of a Trump executive order aimed at eliminating Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti and Syria, and will examine this case on April 29, 2029.

A Commission Manages the DIE

Following the case of the issuance of "real-fake" passports (https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-47155-zapping-haiti-of-march-26-2026.html), the Ministry of the Interior and Territorial Communities (MICT), in order to take over and restructure the Directorate of Immigration and Emigration (DIE), has established a three-member Commission to head the DIE : composed of Fednel Zidor, coordinator, James-Stanley Pierre, and Jacques Edouard Dessejour Lapierre, members.

Citadelle : 250,000 Gourdes for each victim's family

On Thursday, April 16, 2026, Marc Présumé, the Departmental Delegate for the North, announced that an allowance of 250,000 gourdes will be granted to each family who lost a loved one in the tragedy that occurred at the Citadelle Laferrière in Milot. The first families should receive this assistance starting April 16. Fort Jacques Unguarded

At the entrance to the Fort Jacques site, there are no control devices; a simple chain blocks access. Once inside the site, the fort's remains are exposed and unguarded. No apparent measures—no cameras, systematic checks, or increased security presence—are in place to regulate entry and exit in case of crowds. According to our sources, the site has only two security guards.
