FLASH - Historic meeting between Haiti's PM Fils Aimé and Pope Leo XIV 10/05/2026 06:31:45
On Saturday morning, May 9, 2026, Pope Leo XIV received the Prime Minister of Haiti, Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, in audience before the latter met at the Secretariat of State with Cardinal Pietro Parolin and Archbishop Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations. During their discussions, "satisfaction was expressed regarding the good relations between the Holy See and Haiti" The Church’s particular role in the current turbulent period was also highlighted. During this historic meeting, the two dignitaries discussed the socio-political situation and the challenges in the humanitarian, migration, and security fields. The necessary contribution of the international community to address the current difficulties was also mentioned.
The Prime Minister took the opportunity to present the Pope with a jersey from the national football team which qualified with pain and dignity for the final phase of the 2026 World Cup.
On Saturday at 4:00 PM, Prime Minister Fils-Aimé attended a Mass for Peace in Haiti celebrated in the Basilica of Saint Mary Major by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Holy See, in the presence of high-ranking officials of the Holy See, members of the diplomatic corps, and the Haitian community living in Italy. This Mass was dedicated to prayer for peace, stability, and national reconciliation in Haiti. Cardinal Parolin’s homily focused on hope, reconciliation, and international solidarity. The Cardinal urged the Haitian people to engage in a “patient process of building justice and dialogue,” affirming that peace can only arise from a sincere desire for reconciliation among all sectors of society. He expressed the Church’s deep concern for the suffering caused by gang violence, particularly mentioning displaced families and those suffering from malnutrition. Cardinal Parolin reiterated the need for a “necessary contribution” and increased mobilization of international partners, emphasizing that Haiti must not be left alone to face its security and humanitarian challenges. He called for a “laying of the guns” and reminded everyone that the Church remains a “leaven of peace” and an unwavering support for the country during this time of transition.
Following the Mass, Prime Minister Fils-Aimé addressed the gathering to thank the Holy See and commend the initiative of this celebration dedicated to Haiti. The Prime Minister reaffirmed the Haitian government's commitment to restoring security, strengthening national cohesion, and creating the conditions for a lasting return to stability, particularly through the preparation of inclusive elections. He also emphasized the importance of interreligious dialogue, the essential role of the Catholic Church in Haiti in social matters, and the contribution of the Haitian diaspora to the national reconstruction process.
Finally, the Prime Minister called for increased support from the international community and mentioned the need for an international solidarity conference for Haiti.
