Haiti - World Environment Day 2026 : Green Jobs and Citizen Action

On Friday, June 5, 2026, as part of the celebration of World Environment Day, the Ministry of the Environment commended the strong mobilization achieved through its Departmental Directorates, which implemented a series of awareness-raising, environmental education, and civic engagement activities for the day.

National Mobilization in the Departments on June 5

North :

In the North, awareness-raising activities were conducted in schools in several municipalities, notably in Cap-Haïtien, Acul-du-Nord, and Plaine-du-Nord, where more than 1,200 students were reached. The celebration included panel discussions, awareness walks, and the restoration of an energy forest in Mapou (Plaisance).

Northeast :

In the Northeast, more than 500 schoolchildren were educated about plastic pollution and ecosystem restoration. The day included tree-planting activities in Morne-Casse and a large-scale awareness campaign involving several schools.

Northwest :

In the Northwest, preparatory activities focused on training journalists and teachers on climate change and their role in raising awareness and disseminating reliable information, facilitating dialogue among stakeholders, and raising awareness in schools. An awareness walk, a beach cleanup in Haut-Fourneau, the planting of approximately 500 coconut trees, and educational activities in the mangrove were organized in Port-de-Paix.

Artibonite :

In Artibonite, departmental teams continued their environmental awareness and community mobilization efforts focused on protecting natural resources and improving living conditions.

Centre :

In the Centre, activities emphasized raising awareness among young people, protecting watersheds, and promoting environmentally sound practices.

West :

In the West Department, the Departmental Directorates intensified awareness activities in schools through tree planting at the Canapé-Vert Urban Nature Park and a large-scale awareness campaign involving several schools in Delmas and Pétion-ville.

Nippes :

In Nippes, more than 1,500 students and teachers from fifteen schools in five municipalities across the department participated in awareness-raising activities. The activities of the Eco-Genius 2026 competition played a significant role in these celebrations.

South :

In the South, nearly 3,000 students were reached through an environmental education campaign conducted in five municipalities focusing on waste management, natural resource protection, and climate change. Awareness-raising activities, community mobilization, and tree planting continued on the occasion of World Environment Day.

Southeast :

In the Southeast, the Departmental Directorate organized the first Departmental Forum on Climate Change, complementing the activities of the "Environmental Fridays" and the Eco-Genius program. Several activities took place, including the distribution of eco-friendly stoves in Belle-Anse, climate and energy training sessions, an environmental fair, and a parade in Jacmel.

Grand'Anse :

In Grande Anse, efforts have focused on institutional consultation and mobilizing partners around environmental issues. Activities have particularly emphasized the protection of the Clément Spring, a strategic resource for the water supply of the city of Jérémie.

At the Karibe Hotel in Pétion-ville, the Ministry of the Environment organized a major open house around the them e: "Green Jobs Serving a Sustainable Haiti". Held under the patronage of the Prime Minister, this event brought together the Ministry's technical departments, the National Agency for Protected Areas (ANAP), the National Solid Waste Management Service (SNGRS), the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME), environmental companies, artisans specializing in recycling, academics, technical and financial partners, as well as several hundred schoolchildren and young people.

The program included institutional, artisanal, and entrepreneurial exhibitions; conferences on green jobs and the blue economy; educational activities for young people; and an official ceremony featuring the reading of letters written by schoolchildren outlining their vision of the Haitian environment in 2050.
