Haiti - Environment : Environmental guidelines for the Industrial Park North

Contribute to the establishment of Industrial Park North (Caracol), environmentally friendly, was this week at the heart of a meeting at the Hotel Montana, at the initiative of Minister of Environment, Joseph Ronald Toussaint. Was present at this high level meeting, representatives of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the Interamerican Development Bank (IDB), the Fund for the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and donor. Mobilize the necessary funding and explore ways and means to reconcile economic interests and those of the natural heritage of the region was the purpose of the meeting.

With the implementation of this Industrial Park, the area may receive significant emigration [almost 60.000 jobs] recalled the Minister who stressed the importance of having a proper environmental management, to avoid negative impacts on the natural and cultural capital of NorthEast [mangroves and corals from Caracol to Fort-Liberté, historic sites of Fort-Liberté and pre-Columbian sites of Lemonade] and the necessity to fund an Environmental Strategic Plan, in order to anticipate the destruction of certain natural resources in the region. The Environment Ministry has reported several provisions such as the creation of a protected marine park [creation of the park of the Three Bays and the Lagoons at Bœufs], the development of a pattern of land use and the establishment of a program of sustainable management of the watershed of Trou du Nord.

Representatives of international organizations present welcomed the initiative and pledged to support it. Marc-André Franche, UNDP Representative acknowledged that the construction of this Industrial Park pose significant environmental challenges and announced that his program was committed to supporting this plan, both administratively and financially.

More than 50 million U.S. dollars will be needed for the realization of this environmental plan. However, as pointed out by the Minister of Environment, only 4.1 million have been identified so far.
