Haiti - Environment : The Minister Jean Vilmond Hilaire in Qatar

Jean Vilmond Hilaire, the Ministry of Environment is currently in Doha, Qatar to participate in the 18th Conference of the Parties (COP18) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change taking place at "Qatar National Convention Centre" from 27 November to 7 December 2012.

Nearly 20,000 people attend this event whose 17.000 delegates from 194 countries and thousands of NGOs, to which many Head of States will join from 4 to 7 December. In other words, the greatest Nations of the world meet [once again] to discuss climate change and how to fight against pollution.

In his speech, the Minister Vilmond Jean Hilaire, intends to highlight the concerns and worries of the Government and people of Haiti, face the alarming proportions that take climate events. He will relate in particular, the latest consequences affecting the structures of the country hardest hit in less than 2 months by the passages of Isaac and Sandy. According to Dr. Vilmond, "these climatic events are an obstacle to development efforts that the government deployed. It is necessary to act quickly, and take adaptation measures and of mitigation with the limited resources we have."

One of the major objectives of this conference is to arrive in the framework of the 8th session of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol, which takes place simultaneously, to a second commitment period of the Protocol, which would specify clear targets for reducing CO2.

Haiti will advocate for the provision of more resources related to the adaptation activities and believes that at the end of the conference, they will reach an agreement, which will define the ways and means to achieve this common goal.
