Haiti - Politic : Local Development and Decentralization

This Thursday, June 27, as part of a project financed by the European Union, the City of Kenscoff and the "Groupe d'Actions Francophone pour l'Environnement" (GAFE) launched the "Days of communal meetings around local development and decentralization in Haiti".

Part of the project "Of development of areas of local democracy and od strengthening of the capacities of local officials for a better governance of the municipality of Kenscoff" implemented by the City of Kenscoff these exchanges that took place with various municipal authorities in the country, were designed to specifically ask the question of effective decentralization of communities, who face many constraints while they have a fundamental role to play in the development of Haiti.

These exchanges allowed, among others to raise problematic relating to the role of civil society and of the participatory democracy in the communal development, and to identify the skills needed to develop and manage projects within communities.

This initiative is supported by the European Union, which accompanies the process of decentralization in Haiti, particularly through the Support Program for Governance and Local Investment in Haiti (Appui à la Gouvernance et à l'Investissement Local en Haïti - AGIL), funded to the tune of $5,5 million. The EU also supports capacity building of local communities through other programs such as the Programme of support to strengthen civil society in Haiti (PARSCH) and the Non State Actors and Local Authorities (NSA - LA) support.
