Haiti - Environment : Visit of President Martelly to the National Park «La Visite»

On Tuesday, the President Michel Martelly, accompanied, among others by, Jean François Thomas, the Minister of the Environment, Ms Irina Bokova, Director General of the Organization of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and Michaëlle Jean, the Special Envoy UNESCO for Haiti, went to Seguin in the communal section of Fond Jean Noël, in Marigot (Southeast).

The Head of State wanted to see the condition of the National Park La Visite. He congratulated UNESCO for its support in this area and took the opportunity to raise awareness and encourage dozens of agents of Monitoring body assigned to this site.

Irina Bokova and Michaëlle Jean, impressed by the commitment of President Martelly in environmental matters, expressed their satisfaction after the visit. While recognizing the efforts already made ​​in terms of environmental protection, they call all partners: the State, the Private and citizens to become more involved in actions aimed at preserving the rich biosphere of Haiti .

The President of the Republic accompanied by the Minister of the Environment and Director of Environmental Monitoring Body uring his visit to the La Visite Park in Seguin.

La Visite National Park is a natural site that has been integrated into the World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2012. Other sites, such as the Massif de la Hotte and Macaya National Park constituting the largest biodiversity in the country, will be proposed in 2014 as biosphere reserves.

Before leaving Seguin, President Martelly and Ms. Bokova had discussions on several topics. The technical support from UNESCO was requested with respect to, among other things, education and environmental awareness through programs that stimulate the involvement of students and teachers in environmental protection, to the strengthening of the National Agency for Protected Areas (ANAP) and the establishment of Auxiliaries of environmental monitoring in order to convert them into Awareness Agents.
