Haiti - FLASH : Resumption of commercial activities in Dajabón

Sunday, Andrés Navarro, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Dominican Republic and Jose del Castillo, Minister of Industry and Trade, held a meeting with producers, traders and transporters of the border of the province of Dajabón in presence of local authorities and accredited Dominican consuls in Haiti.

At this meeting the Dominican traders and carriers, have decided to end their strike which began on 8 October https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15405-haiti-economy-trade-totally-paralyzed-at-the-border-of-dajabon.html to protest against the ban on imports by land imposed by Haiti on 23 products since 1 October 2015 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15156-haiti-notice-import-ban-by-road-of-certain-products-from-dr.html

In a press conference after the meeting, Freddy Morillo, President of the Federation of Bilateral Markets Traders of Dajabón and Fernando Díaz, leader of the Trade Associations of the binational market acting as spokesperson for the trade associations, said that after analyzing the situation in the border area with government authorities and representatives of border communities, it was decided to resume from Monday, trade with Haiti and the resumption of activities of the binational market held Mondays and Friday in this city of the northern border.

They indicated they had submitted a proposal in 5 points to the Dominican Government Commission to discuss the situation resulting from the export ban to Haiti and that from today [Sunday] it was agreed to maintain a permanent dialogue with the authorities to find viable alternatives to the problems that may arise in the region.

In the document submitted to the Commission, they call for greater firmness of the Dominican Government in the negotiations to defend the right of residents to the trade border, because it is their only means of subsistence. They asked for suspended exports by air and sea of products included in the prohibition of Haiti, until the restriction is removed by road. He also asked the Dominican government provide assistance to producers and traders affected this ban, the creation of funding mechanisms and tax breaks to encourage those affected and allow the expansion of border trade.

Likewise, they stated that is requested to the Government of Haiti a greater flexibility with their citizens buying products on the binational market, because many times these purchases are seized and destroyed, even those that are not banned, which causes problems on both sides of the border.

Recall that this decision is also part of the context of the resumption of bilateral dialogue on October 13, where it was agreed that in the next 15 days will gather Ministers of Industry and Commerce of the two countries, entrepreneurs and representatives of the European Union, as well as Customs officials to define an agreement to enhance trade and standardization of land transport between the two countries https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-15450-haiti-dominican-republic-resumption-of-bilateral-dialogue.html
