Haiti - Politic : Important meeting of UN agencies with the Prime Minister

A delegation from the United Nations Development Group for Latin America and the Caribbean (UNDG-LAC) led by Ms Jessica Faieta, UN Assistant Secretary General, Chair of the UNDG – LAC and UN Development Programme Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean reaffirmed met last week with the Haitian Prime Minister, Evans Paul, the commitment of UN agencies to support Haiti in its transition from the humanitarian framework towards long-term development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The delegation was composed of the regional directors of nine UN agencies (UNDP, UNOPS, UNOCHA, ILO, WFP, UNHCR, PAHO/OMS, UNICEF and UNISDR) accompanied by the Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary General and Resident Coordinator of the UN in Haiti, Mourad Wahba. The Prime Minister and members of the Cabinet agreed with the UNDG-LAC delegation on the importance of strengthening collaboration on key priorities for Haiti such as improved aid coordination, binational relations, the electoral process, access to health care, agriculture development, professional training, internal displaced persons after the earthquake (IDP) and disaster risk reduction and preparedness.

During this visit to Haiti, the UNDG delegation also met with the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Sandra Honoré, and representatives from the World Bank and civil society organizations. They discussed the current and future role of the United Nations country team in Haiti.

Jessica Faieta, reaffirmed the "engagement of UN agencies to support the Government's efforts to move from humanitarian assistance towards long term development," stressing "the important role of the current election process to consolidate democracy and peace."
