On Monday more than 5,000 migrants, mostly Haitians but also Cuban and Venezuelan migrants, gathered in the stadium of the municipality of Tapachula (State of Chiapas, southern Mexico) controlled by the National Guard, transformed for the occasion by the National Institute of Migration of Mexico (INM) supported by the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR) "in a makeshift migration office" to try to allow migrants to apply for refugee, protected status or visa.

"We need documents to be able to travel to Mexico," said a Haitian migrant in the endless queue under the scorching sun, noting that without a proper visa they are sent back to Tapachula. The migrants urge the authorities to let them transit freely through Mexico to reach the US-Mexico border in the north.

Let's recall that two migrant caravans largely made up of Haitians have already left Tapachula in recent weeks, many on foot for the long journey in the hope of reaching the US-Mexico border.

About 100 km from the city of Mapastepec (Chiapas State), a caravan of around 2,500 mostly Haitian migrants heading north paused. One of the Haitians indicated that he hoped to obtain a visa more easily in another State of Mexico, even if for that he had to walk hundreds of kilometers...

Of the 116,500 asylum or protected status applications received so far, since the start of 2021, nearly half have come from Haitian citizens. The INM estimates that by the end of the year 130,000 people will have applied for asylum or protected status in Mexico...
