Haiti - Carnival in Desdunes : A sound truck rushes into the crowd at least 23 victims (video)

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday March 3 around 3:00 am, the last fat day of the carnival in Desdunes (Atibonite), the driver of a sound truck on the Grand-rue suddenly lost control of his vehicle which crashed into the crowd causing a movement of total panic among festival-goers.

The toll is heavy : 5 dead on the spot, including a presenter of Réalité FM 95.1 radio and a 9-year-old, as well as 18 injured, several of them seriously.

According to Phanord Pierre, acting agent for Desdune, the brakes of the truck would have failed.

The truck driver fled.

Reacting to the news, the Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry declared on his Twitter account "I am very saddened by the death of five of our compatriots, which occurred yesterday in Desdunes, during the carnival festivities. My thoughts go out to the families of the victims, as well as to the injured. May they all be assured of the solidarity of my government !"
