Haiti - Diplomacy : Macron's remarks: Towards a diplomatic crisis between Haiti and France?

Thursday, November 21, 2024 Jean-Victor Harvel Jean-Baptiste, the new Minister of Foreign Affairs received, following a summons, the French Ambassador accredited to Haiti, Antoine Michon, concerning remarks deemed unacceptable by the Haitian Government, made by French President Emmanuel Macron at the end of the G20 Summit in Rio, Brazil, before his departure for Chile where the French Diplomat described as "idiots" the members of the Transitional Council who decided to dismiss Prime Minister Garry Conille.

Chancellor Jean-Baptiste informed him of the Transitional Council's indignation at what he considers to be "an unfriendly and inappropriate gesture that deserves to be corrected."

A letter of protest addressed to Jean-Noël Barrot, Minister of Europe and Foreign Affairs of France was delivered to Ambassador Michon.

The French diplomat acknowledged that these were "unfortunate remarks that were made in a very special context" while promising that France will always remain alongside Haiti and the Haitian people to help advance the Transition agenda, including the restoration of security and the holding of elections.

What the video does not show is the context, President Macron reacted strongly to an insistent Haitian, who accused France of being responsible for the situation in Haiti, referring to the French debt of independence, to which Macron preferred to sidestep and shift this responsibility to the Haitians and the Presidential Transitional Council which decided to revoke former Prime Minister Garry Conille. https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-43681-haiti-flash-president-macron-interferes-and-insults-haitian-authorities-video.html
