Haiti - Social : 168 Haitian poeple boat intercepted in Turks and Caicos

Monday morning, the authorities of Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) confirmed that they had intercepted a boat with 168 illegal migrants coming from Haiti. The 168 passengers were transferred to the detention center of the territory for the treatment of their case and their repatriation to Haiti.

icardo Gardiner, Border Control Minister, declared that the government "will not tolerate this illegal activity [...] To those who will test our resolve to enforce our border security, I will tell them to think again. It is a dangerous journey that they undertake, often on overcrowded and unsafe vessels which endanger their lives and the lives of their families [...] We will not tolerate any abuse of our security. We will detect your ship, your ship will be seized and destroyed and its captain prosecuted. We will detain anyone who try to come here illegally and they will be sent back home."

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a frequent destination for migrants from Haiti. Last month, a ship carrying 115 migrants from Haiti was also intercepted.
